To keep the mathematical models as simple as possible and easily solved, it is a common practice to make simplifying assumptions about the physics of the crash event (e.g., by using one- or two-dimensional models).

 

However, to increase the accuracy of modelling the physics of the crash, it is necessary to increase the complexity of the mathematical models, including, just as an example, re-road contact, how the external forces and the intervene on of active safety systems such as ABS (An-lock Braking System) or ESP (Electronic Stability Program) act on vehicle dynamics. That usually results in solving complex nonlinear equations.

 

More recent advantages are also the possibility to easily import point cloud and use them to measure the vehicle deformation and calculate their absorbed energy (deformation energy). For this reason, it is the common practice to engage in the use of a software reconstruction tool. Hereafter the most used software in the field of crash reconstruction is listed.
